Background of the Study
Storytelling has been a fundamental method of teaching and knowledge transfer for centuries, and in nursing education, it serves as a powerful tool for enhancing patient care skills. Narrative-based learning fosters emotional engagement, improves critical thinking, and enhances retention of complex medical concepts (Hoffman et al., 2023). In patient care, storytelling helps nursing students understand patient experiences, develop empathy, and refine their decision-making abilities (Olajide & Bello, 2024).
Traditional nursing education in Nigeria often relies on lecture-based teaching, which may not adequately engage students in the realities of patient care (Adeyemi et al., 2024). At Ogun State College of Nursing and Midwifery, integrating storytelling into teaching methods has been suggested as a way to improve learning outcomes. However, there is limited research on the effectiveness of this approach in nursing education within the Nigerian context. This study evaluates how storytelling enhances learning and patient care competency among nursing students.
Statement of the Problem
Patient care requires not only technical skills but also emotional intelligence, cultural sensitivity, and strong communication abilities. Traditional nursing education methods often fail to prepare students adequately in these areas, leading to gaps in patient-centered care (Williams et al., 2024).
Despite the recognized benefits of storytelling in education, its application in nursing training at Ogun State College of Nursing and Midwifery remains underexplored. There is a need to assess whether storytelling enhances students’ understanding of patient care concepts, improves their empathy, and strengthens their clinical decision-making skills.
